This track and field season has started with much excitement and has continued to make our school look good. For the first time in awhile there has been a full four 4×100 girls teams to compete, two varsity, and two JV. The boys also have a great 4×100 team. They are 7th in state with Quaid Walters, Riley Richmond, Daniel White, and Shashi Penn leading it. This is a team made up of mostly upperclassmen as opposed to the girls varsity with Cassidy Walters, Diana Gilliland, Olivia Rooney, and Samantha Lilley all of whom are freshmen.
As far as field events go, the throwing team has also decided to try running for the special event known as the “Fat Mans Race”. It is a regular 4×400 team except it’s solely made up of throwers; Christopher Robinson, Joseph Yaconelli, Dominic Meads, and Gray Lunn have all made the choice to participate in it at all the meets. In the meet against the South Medford Panthers, they raced against the varsity team. Kelsey Mckelvey is expected to make it to state with her 124’ throw in javelin. Pole vaulting is being revived this year, with many newcomers trying it out. Senior, Brandon Vaughn is expected to reach the 14’ mark.
The coaches are very happy with the teams and athletes. Head coach Hans Vasquez is still going steady and keeping our team strong. With a long tradition of excellence and pride, everyone is working their hardest to impress the district and hopefully state. This is sure to be a fantastic season that all student body should go watch. The next meet will be this Wednesday, May 1st at AHS.
