In recent years, the decaying of the concrete and the cement around Ashland High School’s campus has been brought to the attention of students and staff. For example, there has been an increase of potholes, preventing student drivers and staff from safety entering and exiting the parking lots around campus, as well as the redwood tree on the quad causing cracking and the raising of the concrete, creating a hazard for students, especially those with limited mobility. This is due to the lack of water the tree is receiving, so the roots have begun to search for water elsewhere. The school is working to improve the heating and AC systems which will improve the irrigation for the time being. On the other hand, the student parking lot is in shambles. As seen in the pictures provided, there are numerous large and unsafe potholes and breakage throughout the parking lot, making it difficult to swiftly cruise and park. After many complaints, Rogue News has recognized the severity of the issue. When you hit a pothole it can damage your car’s tires, wheels, and suspension. Plus, they can lead to some dodgy swerving as drivers try to avoid them, which isn’t exactly safe. Apart from the immediate damage to your car, potholes can also cause accidents if drivers lose control while trying to avoid them. They can be especially dangerous during bad weather when they fill up with water and become hidden hazards. Although driving at high speeds and swearing isn’t exactly the norm on a day-to-day basis here at Ashland High School, this is a consistent issue that we hope will be fixed.
