Rogue Valley soccer team in State Cup final

RVSC Fuego want it all. And they might just get it, and more. The U-18 Rogue Valley Soccer Club team will play in the finals of the 2011 Oregon Youth Soccer Association State Cup in Salem on Saturday, May 7, against Pacific FC.

Head coach Kevin Primerano is feeling confident about the upcoming match. “We have had the State Cup Championship game on our calendar since day one,” he said. “Our hope is to first bring the state title to the Rogue Valley, and then go on to see how we compare to the best teams in the Western United States.”In addition to determining state-wide dominance, the game also has further ramifications. The winners get a spot in the Far West Regional Tournament, where they will compete against the best teams in the Western United States.

Ashland Grizzlies make up the largest chunk of the valley-wide team, filling eight spots, while North Medford has the second largest portion with 6 players. “The group is represented by boys from seven different high school and everyone of those boys has a tremendous amount of talent,” Primerano said. “I believe this is a testament to what happens to what can happen when the Southern Oregon Soccer Community comes together.”

Since its formation in December Fuego has dominated in league play, boasting six wins with only one loss, and a +19 goal differential. They also participated in the Mayor’s Cup, an invitational tournament in Las Vegas, and found some success but did not progress to the final. “I believe the boys have worked hard over the last 5 months,” said Primerano. “Now it is time for that hard work to bear some fruit.”
